ENC 1101
ENC 2135
For ENC 2135, the strand that I plan to use is strand six: Genre as/in Pop culture. The reason I would choose this strand is because I think that in modern-day times that we live in is a very pop-culture centric world. And the way I look at it, there is a reason as to why that is so; these genres that exist around us offer some type appeal that keeps us coming back. My mentor in my internship used this strand and I found it to be quite compelling as well as effective. She chose to filter this strand in the framework of fairytales, which gave me the idea that I want to do something similar but use comic book superheroes/villains instead. This is something of great interest to me because conducting research on a select group of comic book characters for the conference I presented at attached to San Diego International Comic Arts Convention, I saw how relevant these characters are in literary perspective. I think that my ultimate goal for students to get out of this class is for them to see how even superheroes are relevant to this conversation of genre and how they can almost take anything around them and look at it through a genre lens.
For ENC 1101 the strand that I would select is strand one, Engaging Cultural Mediums: Multimedia Texts, with Dobrin’s Writing Situations. I would choose this strand because I feel that it highlights one of the major aspects of writing directly: writing for different audiences. A lot of these freshman are coming from high school where their audience was only their teacher. This strand also addresses how language is an integral part of writing and how it can change from medium to medium, highlighting the effects those changes have on the audience. During the first couple of years of my undergrad, I was someone who did not always pay attention to the language I used, and it would sometimes convey something different to two different people. As a teacher, I want to establish to my students that their words and audience does matter and to not write generically. They will need to shape and shift their writing accordingly, regarding to who they are writing to. Structing assignments where I provide the audience they will be writing to would be a beneficial way of getting them to understand that this is an important factor of writing that they need to pay attention to.
