Trigger Warning: This short story deals with Suicide
Read this short story about Superman,https://www.booksie.com/posting/neosapien/superman-393626 . Then either:
1. Comment 1 question
OR
2. Comment something that interested you about this story and state WHY it interests you. Do not just say "I thought that one part was interesting."
Next, you will respond to someone else's comment on this post. Try to focus on the rhetorical situation and effectiveness of this short story and how it uses the Superman story from the comics to create their own version in this genre. Is it successful? Would you make changes? etc.
The most interesting aspect of this short story was how human the author made Superman out to be. The hardest part about being a superhero is the amount of selflessness that it takes to save a world that sometimes doesn't deserve to be saved. This version of Superman lacked the necessary selflessness that it takes to carry out such a tremendous task.
In response to Leemor's question: In this particular case, I think yes. Only because he looked for happiness and validation through superficial means.
Do you think that if Superman had known he was able to end his life at anytime he would have been more relaxed and less frantic for approval?
In response to Spencer's question, I don't find Superman weaker as the only one who can kill him is himself.
The story was definitely a plot twist for me in the way that i had a goal already but once i read it, it completely turned around my mindset. How is this superman different then the original superman that you know/think of?
In response to Leemor I think yes and no it was a complicated situation because how could someone feel better about knowing how to die but in his part he knew what he had to avoid to not die.
Q1. Do you find super man weaker now that we know exactly what can kill him
In response to Jack No. I still think superman is the top dog super hero regardless of what I read about him.
Overall the story was extremely strange and had a unexpected ending. I think it did bring a good point about how money and power do not bring an individual happiness. I also think it shows that we are not meant to live for eternity or there is no point to life and it is meaningless.
In response to Delaney, I agree with what you said about the story not correlating with the subject of suicide and think they could have found a different message to use with the story.
